SEARCH 1

The first phase of the SEARCH initiative (2006-2009) led to the creation of a comprehensive database of the measurements of outdoor and indoor concentrations of several air pollutants in about 400 classrooms; and health assessments of more than 7,000 children in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and Slovakia.

The main aims of this phase were to:

  • Implementation of the EU Environment and Health Strategy, Action Plan;
  • participate in the implementation of Priority Goal 3 of the Children's Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) on the prevention and reduction of respiratory diseases due to outdoor and indoor air pollution;
  • assess the associations between the school environment and children's respiratory health; and
  • provide recommendations to improve the quality of the school environment.

The project was implemented with the generous support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea
