Activity update

Kazakhstan is a newcomer to the SEARCH project and is carrying out its activities in close cooperation with experts from Tajikistan within the framework of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC). Four pilot locations (Almaty, Astana, Karaganda region and Pavlodar) and 10 pilot schools were selected and informed about SEARCH II project implementation. Since Kazakhstan will carry out environmental monitoring and health assessments in addition to energy consumption and health comfort assessments, three key experts were appointed.

Project background documents were translated into Russian by CAREC and the REC, and the school questionnaires were then translated and adapted into Kazakh. The national experts are carrying out the four measurement activities in parallel between January and mid-April 2012, the end of the heating season.

A joint sub-regional meeting for participating managers and experts from both countries was organised by CAREC. This meeting also provided an opportunity for introducing the project equipment. School principals in each country have also been invited to sign memorandums of understanding.

Both CAREC countries have prepared a manual for teachers, parents and students, which explains the project objectives, methodology, expected results and outcomes. The manual, which also gives an overview of the participating pilot schools, is due to be published in March 2012 in Russian and disseminated in the 20 pilot schools in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.
